Introduction to CRISPR genome editing – SRP inspirational course

PLEASE NOTE: THE COURSE DATES HAVE BEEN CHANGED FROM 11-12 FEBRUARY TO 14-15 JANUARY 2020

Deadline for sign up: It is no longer possible to apply

Do you want inspiration for your SRP assignment? And are you interested in CRISPR technology? Biotech Research & Innovation Center offers inspirational course for Danish high school students in January 2020.

CRISPR genome editing is a breakthrough technology which allows researchers to alter DNA sequences and modify gene function. The technology has strongly improved scientists ability to establish animal models for human diseases and to treat human patients suffering from genetic diseases. However, the method also raises serious ethical concerns as was seen in 2018, when Chinese scientist He Jiankui’s generation of CRISPR genome edited humans generated a heavy debate worldwide.

This short course will introduce to the basics of CRISPR genome editing, give hands-on-experience in the generation of CRISPR mediated gene knockouts, and will discuss ethical implications of this technology.

On day 1, course participants will transfect cells with a CRISPR nuclease that will trigger the activation of a red fluorescent protein, which will be checked by fluorescence microscopy on day 2. In addition, the participants will introduce a deletion into the C-C chemokine receptor type 5 (CCR5), which in humans will protect for HIV infection, but reduces life expectancy. They will also learn how to use bioinformatic tools to design new CRISPR nucleases.

When and where: 14-15 January. Both days 9-16, Biotech Research & Innovation Centre, Ole Maaløesvej 5, 2200 Nørrebro

Apply before 1 December 2019. If number of applicants exceed number of seats, selection will be made by draw. Please note, that we only accept one student per school.

Acceptance info will be sent out during week 51.

Requirements: Biotechnology or Biology at A level. Each participant must arrange his/her own accommodation and travel. The course is in English.

Please note that we do not offer guidance after then end of the course.
