Do you want to spend your summer as a brain scientist?
Research centre BRIC at the University of Copenhagen offers 4 summer internships for ambitious high school students with an interest in neuro science.
Are you a high school student with biotechnology or biology at A or B level? Have you just completed 2.G and would you be interested in spending part of your summer at an international research center at the University of Copenhagen? Do you want to take part in real research projects, learn about brain development and neuro disease and get an insight into the everyday life of a university researcher?
As an intern in the Khodosevich group at the University of Copenhagen, you will get the opportunity to:
- Participate in laboratory and computer-based research activities
- Analyze research data and formulate conclusions
- Present and discuss your findings with researchers from around the world
- Learn about the value and significance of fundamental research
All under the guidance of experienced researchers.
What will I do as an intern?
When you start your internship, you will get an introduction to laboratory safety and receive training in basic laboratory techniques as well as a thorough introduction to the research project you are to work on.
You will be paired with another high school intern in a student team who will work together and spar about your experiences throughout the period. Each student team will be associated with an experienced researcher who will follow and guide you throughout the course.
Your days as an intern are structured like regular workdays. Your activities will alternate between laboratory and analysis tasks in relation to your own project, and besides these you will participate in the group's activities such as group meetings, journal clubs, seminars and social activities. This will will give you chance to learn about the other research projects taking place in the lab, and give you a sense of everyday life as a researcher at a university. At the end of the internship period, you and the other member of your student team will present your results to the entire research group and the others interns and have the opportunity to discuss your results and experiences.
After the internship period has ended, you will receive a diploma documenting your participation in the internship program.
Information meeting
If you are interested in learning more about the internship programme, please sign up for our information meeting, which will take place online on 19/04 from 19-20. At the meeting, group leader Konstantin Khodosevich will present the programme and the research projects, and you will be able to ask questions to the researchers in charge and to one of interns of 2019. Admission requirements and selection procedure
To be eligible to apply you must have completed 2nd year of high school at the time of the programme and study either Biotechnology or Biology or A or B level. BRIC is an international workplace with English as the working language, so you must also have good English skills.
You must supply documentation of Biotechnology or Biology of A or B letter as well as a written motivation of maximum 250 words.
Based on the written motivations, applicants will be shortlisted and the final selection will be done by draw.
The selection is done by the researchers of Khodosevich group.
Application deadline is Monday 17 May 2021 at 12.00.
All applicants will receive answers by Friday the 21 May 2021.
Practical information
- The internship period is 19 July to 6 August 2021.
- BRIC does not offer accommodation and Interns must cover their own travel expenses
- Working hours are approx. 9-16, but can be planned to fit travel times

Khodesevich group is one of Denmark's leading laboratories within the field of neuroscience. The group aims to understanding how the brain is build up during development and what goes wrong neurodevelopmental disorders such as epilepsy, autism and schizophrenia.

About BRIC
Biotech Research & Innovation Center (BRIC) is a research center under the Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Copenhagen. The center has 26 research groups, all of which deal with molecular disease mechanisms.
We are located in Biocenter in Nørrebro in Copenhagen. BRIC is concerned with entering into a lively dialogue with the outside world, and offers a number of initiatives and activities aimed at the public and especially the upper secondary school.
