Buddy Program

The BRIC Buddy Programme connects new PhD students and postdoctoral researchers with experienced BRIC colleagues who can help answer questions, share practical advice, and make settling into life at BRIC a little easier.

Whether you are looking for guidance, a friendly face, or simply someone to have a coffee with, the Buddy Programme is a great way to get started.

Aims

  • Smoothen the start of the PhD/post-doctoral training at BRIC/Finsen and in Copenhagen
  • Strengthen the personal network and interaction between the different research groups and thereby leading to novel collaborations.

Benefits for new employees

Have an experienced colleague from another BRIC/Finsen lab as a buddy to learn/ask/share about the structure, research groups and possibilities at BRIC/Finsen and KU as well as the life in Copenhagen and Denmark. It involves the possibility of participating in social activities, such as sports and parties, simply chatting over coffee, and maybe getting a new friend.

Benefits for the buddy

An opportunity to share your experiences at BRIC/Finsen and the interesting and/or useful stuff you have discovered at UCPH/Copenhagen so far. This is also a great chance to extend your network to researchers you might not otherwise have a chance to interact with.

Role of the buddy

  • Be a first point of contact outside the newcomers host-lab
  • Answering questions and explaining how things work at BRIC/Finsen and in Denmark
  • Sharing scientific knowledge and experience
  • Point to useful resources such as social groups (fx sports teams, special interest groups), websites/apps etc.

The role of the buddy does NOT include

  • Organizing accommodation, childcare and schools, language classes, etc. The International Staff Mobility office should be able to help with these topics (https://ism.ku.dk/)
  • Mentoring or Coaching the newcomer
  • Setting performance expectations and monitoring them
  • Arranging trainings
  • Financial or legal advice
